Journal of Racial and Ethnic Social Equality https://jrese.org.br/index.php/jrese
The Journal of Racial and Ethnic Social Equality (JRESE) was established in 2021, it is published every four months, in the modality of continuous publication, by the Universidade Zumbi dos Palmares, with open access, data, and materials (ISSN 2764-0728). It is peer-reviewed in a double-blind review system, it is published exclusively online, with unlimited free access. There is mounting evidence that ethnic minorities face substantial disadvantages in society, especially in the labor market, some of which is due to racial discrimination by employers. The Journal of Racial and Ethnic Social Equality

documents the progress of literature designed to understand, address, and ultimately appropriately address social disparities based on race and ethnicity. Efforts are presented to explore the underlying causes of social disparities and to describe the interventions that have been undertaken to address racial and ethnic social disparities. Ongoing highly rigorous studies or long-term data studies are most welcome, as are studies that serve as lessons for best practices for the elimination of social disparities. Original research articles, as well as systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and commentary presenting frontier thinking on issues centered on social disparities, will be considered for publication.

The Journal of Racial and Ethnic Social Equality, mainly dedicated to the examination and elimination of racial and ethnic social disparities, is an official publication of the Zumbi de Palmares University, contributing to the elimination of racial and ethnic disparities in emerging markets. The inequality of opportunities, in interaction with issues of structural racism, makes this agenda a relevant research field with a focus on the resulting social problems. This journal publishes results of transdisciplinary research, which brings lessons from different areas of knowledge to address problems arising from this situation. The horizons of racial and ethical social disparity are broad, but the themes of recurrent concern for the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Social Equality are those with a high impact on society, distributed in different topics, for which there are specific editors. Examples of non-exhaustive interest to JRESE are the following fields:

• Labor markets
• Organizational and individual behavior
• Entrepreneurship
• Consumer relations
• Technology, information, and knowledge
• Urban policy and infrastructure
• Health
• Justice
• Education

JRESE seeks to collaborate to promote communication between governmental, business and industrial, academic and non-governmental organizations, which are fundamental in identifying and solving problems related to ethnic and racial social disparity, with regional emphasis and international relevance. To this end, JRESE seeks to advance policy-relevant interdisciplinary research on contemporary issues around the promotion of equity, background, and consequences of racial and ethnic social disparities. To these ends, we understand that research on ethnic and racial social equity values a diverse range of theories, methods, and approaches, especially where they engage with research traditions, evolving debates, and new directions in urban and regional studies. JRESE facilitates and encourages high-quality research efforts aimed at investigating important issues in racial and ethnic social equity. The journal publishes significant contributions, theoretical or empirical, positive or normative. JRESE's main demand is for original documents, which may be of interest to the journal's audience, such as policymakers, academics, and practitioners. Given that JRESE accepts submissions from research efforts supported by different approaches, it is expected that empirical articles studying causal mechanisms will propose a convincing identification strategy. Submitted articles should address modern issues of regional importance, aim to inform debate and policymaking, and be of international relevance. Therefore, manuscripts focusing on regional issues are welcome if they suggest research strategies or offer valuable lessons more generally. Manuscripts that reveal the need for more scientific research are also welcome. All contributions will be independently reviewed. Proposals for common and guest-edited special editions are encouraged and welcomed. JRESE publishes, in addition to unpublished Theoretical-Empirical Articles, Tutorial Articles, and Letters. All articles submitted to the journal must necessarily show a distinctive link with the issue of racial-ethnic social equity.

Frequency: Every four months (with continuous publication)

Note to readers: All datasets and materials published by JRESE will be available on our Harvard Dataverse.
Universidade Zumbi dos Palmares pt-BR Journal of Racial and Ethnic Social Equality 2764-0728
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.

Esta revista continua sendo detentora dos direitos autorais dos artigos publicados. The symposium took place in August 2024 at Zumbi dos Palmares University as part of the Zumbi+20 strategy. This groundbreaking initiative was carried out in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, the Municipal Secretariat for Climate Change, and the Municipal Secretariat of Education. The event also marked the launch of the Super Cities Educating for Environmental, Climate, and Anti-Racist Action Forum and the 'Climáticos' Brigade—a program aimed at mitigating the impacts of extreme climate events and eradicating Environmental Racism.
José Vicente Copyright (c) 2024 José Vicente https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-06 2024-12-06 3 1 1 1 10.55547/jrese.v3i1.30 The Challenge of Educating for a Reality That Needs to Exist https://jrese.org.br/index.php/jrese/article/view/35
This reflection aims to discuss the challenges of contemporary education, especially with regard to the critical understanding of the words 'reality' and 'existence.' The proposal is to argue for the urgency of an education that goes beyond mere knowledge transmission and that shapes individuals capable of critically interpreting the world and transforming their realities, both individually and collectively. The text addresses the importance of awareness in education, inspired by Paulo Freire, as well as the reflection on 'knowledge' in Foucault, in addition to discussing the essential knowledge for the education of the future, as presented by Edgar Morin in 'The Seven Essential Knowledge for the Education of the Future.' Thomas More's work 'Utopia' is also explored, highlighting the fundamental role of the educator as an agent of change for a fairer, more supportive, and environmentally responsible future.
Gilberto Alvarez Giusepone Júnior Copyright (c) 2024 Gilberto Alvarez Giusepone Júnior https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-06 2024-12-06 3 1 19 20 10.55547/jrese.v3i1.35 Resilience https://jrese.org.br/index.php/jrese/article/view/36
This reflection discusses the challenges caused by global warming, which has led to intense climate changes, resulting in the emergence of extreme weather phenomena. It highlights the need for governmental and civil society actions to adapt cities to these new challenges, with a focus on building resilient cities, rather than merely mitigating the effects of climate change. The reflection on climate resilience is central, pointing out the importance of preparing cities to face natural disasters, such as heavy rains and floods, exemplified by the preventive actions in São Paulo. Furthermore, it emphasizes the urgency of reforestation and respect for biodiversity, highlighting the importance of educating society about environmental preservation. Resilience is presented as a tool for the future of cities and humanity, which requires responsible and innovative actions from all of us.
José Renato Copyright (c) 2024 José Renato Nalini https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-06 2024-12-06 3 1 21 22 10.55547/jrese.v3i1.36 From Severe Fragmentation to Necessary Integration https://jrese.org.br/index.php/jrese/article/view/37
Lavito Person Motta Bacarissa Copyright (c) 2024 Lavito Person Motta Bacarissa https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-06 2024-12-06 3 1 23 25 10.55547/jrese.v3i1.37 Note on this special edition https://jrese.org.br/index.php/jrese/article/view/31
This integrated and industry-specific approach has not been previously listed in the literature, offering a new perspective on the implementation of diversity policies, not only at the organizational level but also considering the industry as a whole.
Method: This qualitative research utilizes a case study strategy, focusing specifically on the Brazilian banking sector. Data collection procedures include semi-structured interviews with representatives from banking institutions, regulatory bodies, and justice organizations, alongside the analysis of institutional documents and secondary data. Data analysis follows Gioia, Corley, and Hamilton's (2013) methodology, involving first- and second-order coding to identify emerging themes, culminating in the aggregation of these dimensions into a theoretical model.
Results: Three main sectoral strategies were identified: Legal Compliance Strategy, Social Pressure Strategy, and Recognized Excellence Strategy, forming the set of "Systemic Strategies for Racial Equity." Importantly, these are not individual business strategies but sectoral strategies that should be implemented and led by governmental, regulatory, or societal institutions.
Study Contributions: This study offers a theoretical contribution by proposing a systematized set of sectoral strategies to reduce racial inequality in the Brazilian banking sector. Socially, the research encourages discussion on the need for greater racial equity, highlighting the importance of comprehensive policies that extend beyond isolated business actions.
José Vicente Copyright (c) 2024 José Vicente https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-06 2024-12-06 3 1 3 10 10.55547/jrese.v3i1.32 Democratizing Access to Water and Sanitation https://jrese.org.br/index.php/jrese/article/view/33
This article examines the work of Sustainable Development and Water For All (SDW), a Brazilian social startup dedicated to providing access to drinking water and basic sanitation in rural and remote communities. The text explores the relationship between greenhouse gas emissions, particularly CO2, and the environmental, social, and economic risks, such as biodiversity loss, natural disasters, and the acceleration of climate change. It also highlights the global targets set by the Paris Agreement to limit warming to 1.5°C and the need for concrete actions to reduce emissions, both at the global and local levels. The paper points to the relationship between racial justice and climate change, emphasizing how marginalized communities, such as Indigenous and Black populations, are most affected by environmental impacts, despite contributing little to carbon emissions. The article further examines the strategic role of Brazil, particularly due to the preservation of the Amazon, and the importance of public policies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. It also underscores the role of the private sector and civil society organizations in promoting sustainable practices and strengthening the resilience of these communities, while addressing the need to ensure a fair and inclusive transition, taking social and racial inequalities into account.
Claudio Marques da Silva Odair Marques da Silva Copyright (c) 2024 Claudio Marques da Silva, Odair Marques da Silva https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-06 2024-12-06 3 1 26 31 10.55547/jrese.v3i1.38
